Student opportunities and activities

Barbershop

This initiative provides students with valuable barbering skills and a chance to learn a trade, potentially leading to future careers. The program was launched with donated equipment from Granville Boys High School. Jasper from Alstonville Barber Shop provides professional guidance with students receiving training in customer service, hygiene, and haircutting techniques. This year a number of students from Lismore Heights PS and South Lismore PS visited us and received free haircuts from the trainee barbers.

Barbershop operates on a regular schedule every Wednesday during the school year, offering free haircuts to students and staff.

Show Team

We are incredibly proud of our Show Team who compete at the prestigious Lismore National Show and the Casino Beef Week Led Steer Competition.

Students who join the team have the opportunity to participate in programs that develop skills in animal husbandry, agriculture and parade skills for competitions. The team works together to prepare animals for shows and competes as a team to represent their school and community.

In 2025, the team had great results at the Lismore Show, including first and second place in the Led Steer Competition.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

BroSpeak: connect to Culture, Country and Community through building leadership skills.

Rivers Dance: College group celebrating and sharing Culture through dance and music, performing at NAIDOC events and community functions.

Aboriginal Dance Company: students can audition for dance ensembles that perform at Schools Spectacular.

Widjabal Wiyabal Dreaming Program: College leadership initiative where students work together, share ideas, and have a voice in addressing issues that affect them.

North Coast Academy of Sport Indigenous Talent program: identifies students with specific skills, personal qualities and physical attributes that may lead to becoming a high performing athlete.

CONNECT Program: individualised support and guidance to engage in meaningful career pathways.

National Indigenous Science Education Program: students are trained as leaders.

Beyond the Broncos: mentoring program that provides support for future pathways through career guidance.

Creative and performing arts

Our drama, music and art programs help students be creative and express themselves. They can join in concerts, art shows and drama activities which showcase their incredible talents.

With numerous showcases and performances throughout the year CAPA fosters a vibrant and supportive environment where students can thrive artistically and personally.

Sport

We offer an extensive sports program that includes recreational, fun, and competitive opportunities for all students.

Our in-school programs are complemented by participation in interschool competitions, knockout gala days, and specialist coaching across a wide range of sports.

This diverse offering encourages students to stay active, develop their skills, and enjoy the benefits of teamwork and healthy competition.

Sport is an integral part of our school community, and we take great pride in seeing our students thrive in their chosen fields. Our students consistently demonstrate dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship and we are committed to nurturing and supporting them as they develop their talents.

RASE, the Rivers Academy of STEM Excellence is a college initiative that offers a number of programs, including STEMming the Divide Excursion, Young Women in STEM Workshops and Solar Car Challenge.

Trips and excursions

Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world. Students in Years 7-11 have the opportunity to participate in camps and/or whole day activities:

We offer a number of opportunities for students to engage in wellbeing and specific interest activities before school and at lunchtime:

Green Team

Green Team is a program that provides opportunities for students to develop confident communication skills in leadership and organisation, to improve and promote positive decision making, to develop practical skills in areas such as grounds maintenance and to learn how to maintain machinery such as lawnmowers and whipper snippers. Green Team students have brought a variety of fun and sustainable projects to life, including:

Student Representative Council

This is a great opportunity for students to take on a leadership role and make a difference within our school community. SRC members participate in workshops and a range of activities with their fellow students to enhance their self confidence as a leader and to develop their skills in collaboration. Students are guided to strengthen their student voice and to develop goals for building inclusive, safe and rewarding school environments. This year students have organised events, fundraisers, and community service activities, including:
