Rivers Baseball team reach last 4 in state

The Rivers Secondary College boys Open Baseball team played for a spot in the top 4 in the state against Toronto High School. It was an even match with both teams swinging the bat well. Riley, Reece, Cooper and Brady getting multiple hits and Matthew and Riley adding to the hit. Cooper and Kynan pitched for The Rivers and lead us to a win 10-7. Congratulations to the whole team and of course the team coach Jason Caught.

Another trip for us down to Sydney to play in the semi final against Westfield Sports High School.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

The Australian Wildwater Kayaking Championships were held on The Mersey River, Tasmania during January 2019 with 15-Year-old Kadina student Joshua Lee competing in this prestigious event.

Joshua achieved:

· Third in the Classic race (5km race down rapids) in the under 16 Men’s K1

· Second in the Sprint race (300m race down rapids) in the under 16 Men’s K1 (missing out on gold by 0.5 of a second)

· Second in the Sprint teams race (300m race down rapids) in the under 16 Men’s K1.

As a result of his accomplishments Joshua he has been selected to be a member of the Australian Wildwater Junior Team in the under 18-Year-old category.

Joshua will compete in the Men’s under 18-Year-old K1 class, in the following events:

· 2019 ICF Wildwater Junior

· U23 World Championships which will be held in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina from the 23rd – 28th July 2019.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Weekcelebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

More new classrooms, preschool places and teachers in $17.3 billion education budget

NSW Budget 2018 features historic firsts for education, including record funding to expand the number of new and upgraded schools, unprecedented investment to air condition more classrooms and universal pre-school for three year olds.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, Education Minister Rob Stokes and Early Childhood Minister Sarah Mitchell outlined a range of new initiatives funded by the $17.3 billion education budget in 2018-19.

The Government will be investing $6 billion over the next four years to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools, including planning for more than 20 new projects.

"We are proud to be making this unprecedented investment into the future of our children," Mr Perrottet said.

"This year's NSW Budget takes our already record school building program to another level – a massive 170 schools new and upgraded schools over the next four years.

"That brings our total schools building program to 230 new and upgraded schools since 2011."

"The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government's strong financial management has allowed us to invest so heavily in our schools and education system."

Mr Stokes said communities right across NSW will benefit from this record investment into education.

"NSW is experiencing an increase in school enrolments and we have in place an unprecedented program of investment in new and upgraded schools to meet this demand," Mr Stokes said.

A staged investment of $500 million is being allocated to provide cooling for schools, while improving the indoor environmental quality, through the installation of smart and sustainable air conditioning systems powered by solar energy.

In another landmark initiative, NSW will become the first Australian state to provide universal access to community preschool for three years old under a $197.8 million program.

"Because of this historic investment, average daily fees will decrease significantly and the savings will go directly back into the pockets of hard working families," Mrs Mitchell said.

This brings total spending on early childhood education to $474.3 million in 2018-19.

Other education investment in the 2018-19 NSW Budget includes:

$160 million to be spent in 2018-19 to continue its blitz on planned school maintenance, part of a record $747 million investment over four years;
$71.8 million to implement the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy in NSW schools;
$50 million in additional flexible funding will be provided to government schools to implement the School Leadership Strategy - freeing up principals and school leaders from administrative work;
$3 million for the first comprehensive review of the entire school curriculum since 1989;
$2.8 million to encourage the preservation and study of Aboriginal languages;
$30 million to continue to deliver greater access to green space and sports facilities in public school playgrounds through the Share Our Space program, and;
Funding for around 900 extra full-time equivalent teaching positions in NSW government schools.

The NSW Government will also invest $1.3 billion on non-government schools, an increase of 7.5 per cent on 2017-18. This includes a $32 million increase in the Building Grants Assistance Scheme over four years for capital works projects to support enrolment growth in non-government schools.

The record $17.3 billion investment in education allocates $15.7 billion for recurrent expenses and $1.6 billion for capital investment in 2018-19.

It has been a mammoth effort completing this project and on behalf of The Rivers Secondary College, thank you to all of the students, staff and community groups who have contributed. Lismore performing arts festival

Australian Dance theatre workshops

The Rivers P-12 Learning Community was very fortunate to have the opportunity for The Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) to run two workshops at Lismore High Campus on the 21^st August. Over 60 students from 12 schools participated in this event.

Students were exposed to three fabulous professional dancers taking them through a two hour inspiring workshop for our dancers. The ADT dancers shared their knowledge and skills with our students through a series of exercises developing our student's technique and performance skills. Our students were lucky enough to learn a phrase from ADT's current touring dance work ‘Be Your Self' during the choreography session at the end of the workshop.

Thank you to parents and carers who supported our students getting to and from this event. Our students embraced this opportunity to learn from amazingly talented professional dancers. All students participated with enthusiasm, good manners and pointed toes!

A big thank you to Tom, Felix and Matt from ADT for sharing their knowledge and experience with our young dancers, they provided our community with a wonderful learning opportunity.

Talent Development Program - Dance

Recently primary school students from of our P-12 Learning Community participated in The Rivers first ever Talent Development Program held in the Lismore High Campus dance studio. 23 students from 7 schools took part in the four week program that focused on developing our dancers of the future.

Each week the students developed their understanding of dance and dance technique by participating in warm up exercises, exercises focusing on coordination and choreography. Students successfully completed a dance during the program and performed with lights and costumes in the dance room in the last session. I hope all who participated enjoyed the experience and I hope to see these students pursue dance through The Rivers Dance Ensemble next year. Auditions are in term 4, more information to follow.

The Rivers Secondary College Ancient History Excursion to Sydney

Year 11 and 12 Ancient History students from both Kadina and Richmond River braved the arduous 12 hour train trip to Sydney to be immersed in the Ancient World for 2 days. On arrival, after a rushed breakfast, we headed out to Macquarie University to visit the Museum of Ancient Cultures. We were entertained for a couple of hours by the Museum Director, Karl Van Dyke's, wealth of knowledge. One student, Max experienced being dressed as a Hoplite (Spartan soldier), whilst Karl demonstrated the use of Spartan weaponry. We also viewed the museum's magnificent collection and classified ancient artefacts. After a quick lunch break we visited the Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney. We were guided through the museum collection – viewing a range of displays from mummified Egyptian remains to a Lego model of Pompeii. We were again fortunate to hold and classify ancient artefacts.

Friday the Year 11 students went with Larry Polak to The Big Dig Education Centre at The Rocks, whilst the Year 12 students accompanied me to the History Teachers Association HSC Study day held at the University of Sydney. The program at The Big Dig involved the students using written and archaeological sources to investigate the lives of people living in The Rocks during the 19^th century. Meanwhile Year 12 attended 4 informative lectures relating to their HSC program of study.

We were fortunate to be in Sydney during the Vivid Light display, so after dinner on Friday we took the train to Circular Quay to see the light designs projected on the buildings surrounding the harbour.

Saturday morning before we flew home, we visited a Pompeii exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum. The artefacts displayed were awe inspiring – replicas of plaster casts capturing the moments of death, carbonised bread from AD79 and 24 carat gold jewellery. To me this was the highlight of the trip.

Even though we were all exhausted on arriving back to Ballina a fun and educational time was had by all. I would like to thank Larry Polak for accompanying us and immersing himself in Ancient History, even though it is not his subject area, and all the students for their excellent behaviour and maturity throughout the excursion.

The Far North Coast Dance Festival

Monday 29^th May saw The Rivers Dance Ensemble perform at the Far North Coast Dance Festival 2017. This year's event, one of the biggest on the dance calendar, was held at The Arts Centre on the Gold Coast. The festival is always exciting to attend as it gives our students the opportunity to perform in a professional environment.

This year the Rivers Dance Ensemble was made up of students from all three campuses of The Rivers Secondary College, Goonellabah Public School, Lismore South Public School and Lismore Heights Public School. In addition, there were a further three dances entered; year 7 and year 11 elective classes from RRHC, the year 9 elective from LHC and The Combined Schools Sport group. Altogether, there was close to 70 students representing The Rivers P-12 Learning Community in the festival. The students in these ensembles worked diligently for 16 weeks to perfect these dance items, some students even contributing to the choreography and dedicating extra time to rehearse at lunch times. On the night, Kashmir Miller and Anna McKey, students from The River Secondary College, Lismore High Campus compered the event.

Performances in all four dance items were outstanding at the evening's show, with the organiser mentioning that she was always excited to see what The Rivers P-12 Learning Community would bring to the festival that year. Well done to all performers involved and especially the two dance teachers, Laura Zappia and Elise Dessmann. Thank you for all your hard work and commitment in preparing our students for the Far North Coast Dance Festival.

Both the Open Boys and Girls teams for the Rivers Secondary College progress to the next round in the CHS competition.

On Tuesday the 2^nd of May The Rivers Secondary College Open Boys and Girls Soccer teams took on Casino High School at the SCU artificial pitch.

The girls' game started well for ‘The Rivers' with a consistent possession in the opposition half. The match continued in a similar fashion with ‘The Rivers' holding and circulating the ball in a professional manner. However, the girls could just not get the ball across the line in normal time due to some handy stops from the Casino keeper.

The game ended 0-0 which brought about extra time. Ten minutes each way, golden goal and if still a draw, the dreaded penalty shootout. The first ten minutes went the same way as the regular time, ‘The Rivers' dominating possession but failing to squeeze one past the goalie. There were a few minor changes to the line up throughout the day, it seemed that anything that was tried wouldn't work, until the second period of extra time. The girls were spent, many playing every minute of the match so far and trying everything they could to come away with a win. The minutes were being chewed up by substitutions from the Casino Coach. ‘The Rivers' had the ball with a minute to go, they headed into the opposition box, a blocked shot and a corner for the girls. The corner was taken quickly, and the Casino defence held strong to knock it out, back into the mixer. 21 seconds on the clock left, Dana Wilson, with a mighty right foot strike…it swivels and bends in the air as it hits the top right hand corner. ‘The Rivers' win!!

The game saw an almighty effort from all the players. Special mentions to Breanne Buckley, Dana Wilson, Kendelle O'Reilly, Jakira Toniello and Jazmin Bertuzzi who were gave 100% for their team and moved the ball around extremely well.

Following this game, the boys took to the pitch. After seeing how a defensive side could frustrate an opponent, the players knew a fast and physical start was important to kill off our opponents, and that is just what followed. A goal was scored in the first minute and the dominance continued with a sharp display across the park, heading into the sheds at half time with a 6-0 lead. Players with niggling injuries or those with up-coming games were rested in the second stanza. However, that didn't slow the progress much, with another 4 goals taking our match tally to 10.

Special mentions to Jye Wilson, Bodhi Estreich, Jayden Allen, Issac Essery, Chris Riley and Rhys Daly who stood out in a game where everyone performed well.

Special thanks to Mr John Eakin for his efforts in organising the day, Dan Bordin, the Open Girls football coach, the referees that officiated the match and the players for taking time off exams and school to represent the College. This ensures we progress to the next round of the CHS Knockout in both boys and girls competitions.

Musical talent at ANZAC parade in Lismore

Alyssa, Ella and Daisy have future aspirations with music and love the opportunity they get with the Lismore Extension band...

Alyssa plays the flute in extension band and has been an enthusiastic member since her Lismore Public School days in year 5. She is excited about her future musical opportunities through extension band and looks forward to more performance opportunities at her current Rivers Secondary College Campus, Lismore High.

Ella from Kadina High Campus also plays the flute in the Lismore extension band and has been doing so for four years. She absolutely loves everything musical and would very much love to be a musician. Whilst Ella loves Science as a subject as well as animals, Ella would love to continue playing in the band at Kadina High Campus in addition to extension band. Ms. J (Kadina High) and Ms Clarke (Lismore Public) are two of her favourite people and she loves practice time with them dearly; following one of her passions- music.Ella is a very proud ex-Goonellabah Public School student.

Daisy attends Lismore High Campus and is equally as proud as her fellow extension band members ( Ella and Alyssa) to perform at the 2017 Lismore ANZAC parade. Following one of her hobbies and passions, which began four years ago, Daisy will continue her musical involvement in the extension band and is an aspirational Oboe player. Daisy is very grateful for the exposure to music in primary school (Wyrallah Road Public), and is excited about what other opportunities avail themself to her as she progresses through The Rivers Secondary College, Lismore High Campus.

All three students feel very priveledged to be a part of something that celebrates bravery and history at a local level and all three girls will undoubtedly continue to love music as Rivers Secondary College students. Alyssa, Ella and Daisy would like to sincerely thank their conductor Fiona Clarke, a very passionate educator at Lismore Public School for allowing them this wonderful opportunity at the 2017 Lismore Anzac Parade.

The Rivers Secondary College operations Tuesday 4th April to Friday 7th April - update 5/04/17

Kadina High Campus will continue to be fully operational for staff and students. Lismore High Campus will be operational for staff and students from Tuesday 4th April 2017. Richmond River High Campus will be non-operational. The opportunity for students from Richmond River High Campus to be able to attend Kadina High Campus from Wednesday 5th April to Friday 7th April 2017 is available. They need to report to Kadina High Campus on the grass near the top car park each day by 9am.

Shared curriculum subjects recommence on Tuesday 4th April 2017. The bus will run between Lismore High Campus and Kadina High Campus on Tuesday 4th April and Friday 7th April 2017. The bus will not run at Kadina High Campus on Thursday 6th April due to Kadina High Campus being involved in Cross Country (weather permitting). Therefore no shared curriculum at Kadina High campus on Thursday.

Year 12 Half Yearly exams have been rescheduled for the end of week 1 and beginning of week 2 term 2. A new timetable will be available within the next 48 hours.

TVET classes at Lismore / Wollongbar campuses will NOT operate this week.

The Rivers Secondary College operations 3rd April 2017

Due to the significant impact of flooding in the Lismore area, The Rivers Secondary College will have the following organisation in place.

Kadina High Campus will be operational Monday 3rd April, however without an operational canteen, and with reduced staff.
Lismore High Campus will be non-operational on Monday 3rd April but operational on Tuesday 4th April 2017.
Richmond River High Campus is likely to be non-operational until the end of term 1.

To ensure the integrity of Year 12 exams and equity for all students, each campus will postpone the Year 12 half yearly exams until the first week of term 2. There will be no shared curriculum classes Monday 3rd April. Students will be notified tomorrow regarding shared curriculum arrangements for the rest of the week.

Staff and students of Lismore High Campus and Richmond River High Campus will be informed today by their principals of arrangements for the coming week. It is important that our staff, students and their families stay safe during these difficult events. The thoughts of members of The Rivers Secondary College are with the people of Lismore. Extra information will be posted on the campus websites and sent out via the School Stream App and Facebook.

Oakley is recognised for his outstanding successes with baseball over his secondary education years, receiving a North Coast Sporting Blue.

Oakley is a student of The Rivers Secondary College, Kadina High Campus. Oakley has represented the North Coast region in Baseball for the past four years with distinction.

At the NSW CHS Baseball championships Oakley had quality batting performances and displayed skilful ability as a catcher. He took on other roles within the team and performed to a high standard as a short stop and pitcher throughout these championships.

Named as a Shadow in 2015, Oakley was successful with his selection in the NSW CHS side for 2016. Congratulations Oakley.

Dance is well and truly alive across Public Education schools in our Rivers P-12 Learning Community for the families of Lismore. With two very talented, fully qualified dance teachers, as well as other interested staff across the College, a wonderful showcase of all things dance took to the stage at Lismore High Campus for the first time ever!

Our Rivers P-12 Dance ensemble, our College dance ensemble (years 7-10), year 9 dance classes as well as our Rivers Secondary College Aboriginal Dance ensemble "wowed" the audience members with exciting choreography that is sure to excite and have our local community within and around Lismore talking of the wonderful opportunities we have across The Rivers Schools.

This year 11 November marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year on this day Australians observe one minute's silence at 11 am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Remembering our fallen soldiers on this day is extremely important to The Rivers Secondary College. Beyond the Broncos Personal Branding Workshop 23rd November

Students from our 3 campuses will be involved in the Beyond the Broncos Personal Branding Workshop on the 23rd November.

"This workshop is designed to get participants to question how they present to the world. We ask them how would you like another person or prospective employer to see you: will you be confident, capable, loyal and perhaps demonstrating moral values that reflect the best aspects of our society or will you be forever hoping someone didn't see your antics at that party. We will be challenging them on their values and assumptions and asking them to develop their own set of personal boundaries and behaviours that reflect who they really are and not who they think others, including the media, want them to be as young Indigenous women."

Broncos Ambassadors will be tackling social media sites and the traps they hold for young women and their futures. Responsible social media use will be discussed and how best to set up a personal profile that reflects how they want to be seen in the wider world as they mature.

"It is with absolute pleasure that I take up the role of Principal, Richmond River High Campus. It is good to be back and it was delightful to be greeted with so many happy smiling faces I remembered from my time here as Relieving Principal in 2013. I could not have been made to feel more welcome. This is my third appointment as a Principal with my most recent position being as Principal of Nimbin Central School for the past eight years, a position I enjoyed immensely. Naturally Richmond River High Campus presents some new and interesting challenges and I look forward to meeting those challenges. My thanks go to Mr Peter Howes who has done an outstanding job as Relieving Principal throughout 2016 and I look forward to working alongside Peter and the Executive team to meet the wide and varied needs of our student cohort."

State Drama Festival Student Success

Last week Year 11 TRSC Richmond River High Campus student Pascoe Dunphy performed at the State Drama Festival held in Sydney at the Seymour Centre. Pascoe was involved in the State Drama Camp Representative Group comprising students from across NSW. The piece was titled ‘Robotic Evolution' which explored the ways communication has changed during the evolution of mankind. Over the course of the rehearsal period only 12 hours was spent on the performance that awed and inspired the audience. State Drama Camp and State Drama Festival are fantastic opportunities for your senior Drama students to showcase their talent and experience theatre in new and creative ways. Congratulations Pascoe!

"Thursday the 8th of September was another successful day for the Rivers Secondary College Sport. Both boys and girls under 15s Basketball team winning the first 3 rounds of the CHS tournament.

The Girls team that consisted of Macie Nixon, Tyler Thorley, Natasha Rosa, Elijah Wraight, Taylor Coster, Shoshana Toben, Olivia Gelately, Hayley Elliot, Amelia Mueffels-Pethers and Bianca Kelly who played a physical game against Casino High, but kept their composer and sportsmanship and came away with the win. The girls then faced Evans River in the finals, both teams played a defensive game with The Rivers winning the game by 12 points.

The Boys team that consisted of Jasper Hedges-Makings, Alby Pickford, Johnny Batten, Luc Veit-Prince, Julian Thompson, Bailey Crabtree, Jeneray Crookshank, Sean Taylor, Jordan Pethers, Zeus Rooke and Callum Baine, took an early lead in their first game against Maclean winning 55-4. The Rivers boys overpowered a strong Evan Rivers team in the finals to also win the first 3 rounds of the CHS knockout.

Both teams will now play Byron Bay in a home game in week 9. Stay tuned for more results. Also a big thankyou to Lismore Basketball Association for hosting a great day with 100+ students involved".

The Rivers P-12 Learning Community Dance Initiative has once again displayed it's extensive capacity to provide students within our Rivers primary and secondary public schools network with exciting opportunities to showcase their talents. 16 members of The Rivers Junior Dance Ensemble performed their beautiful piece titled "In Bloom". The students performed with grace, maturity and outstanding energy and received positive feedback on the night. All members should be very proud of their achievements and have continued to earn their place in the elite ensemble.
The Rivers Secondary College have recently joined together to create its first Rivers Aboriginal Performing Arts Ensemble. The ensemble consists of 13 members who worked exceptionally hard to prepare for their second performance together on the Tuesday night of Lismore Performing Arts Festival. The students performed their piece titled " Mother Earth" and in doing so made a significant impact on all those who had the pleasure to view it. The audience where left feeling blown away by their professionalism, focus and connection to the meaning ans spirituality of their piece. A very proud achievement for the students and staff involved.

The Rivers Secondary College Combined Dance Ensemble includes 21 members from years 8-10 who meet each Wednesday morning during sport electives and have created a whimsical dance piece titled "The Wonder of Alice". The ensemble were invited to perform at the Rivers Madness HSC showcase.
The feedback was outstanding!! The students presented a flawless and captivating performance that they can be truly proud of. This was an amazing opportunity for the students to debut their new piece and demonstrate their incredible performance skills to their peers, families and staff of the college.

The art and photography exhibition attracted a huge crowd of parents, Principals and peers who enjoyed the canapés and drinks provided by the Hospitality classes of KHC and RRHC, while admiring and discussing the high quality of the works.

The event then moved to the performances where a near capacity crowd were treated to a very special Welcome to Country in language by Uncle Lewis. For many patrons it was the first time they had experienced Aboriginal language first hand. He then concluded his welcome with an astounding display of didgeridoo, many thanks again to Uncle Lewis for this authentic cultural experience. Mayor Jenny Dowell officially opened the event with unabashed pride and praise for public education and the quality of opportunity that The Rivers College provides in Lismore.

Then it was on with the performances - WOW - singers - guitarists - rock bands - drama monologues - over an hour and a half of quality production, ably ‘managed' by the KHC stage crew. It truly was a wonderful event, thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The acting Executive Director of The Rivers Secondary College, Mr Greg Smith forwarded his heartfelt congratulations, impressed with the energy, collaboration and commitment of The Rivers Secondary College. We wish the Creative And Performing Art students all the best in their upcoming HSC performance exams and, once again, a big thank you and congratulations to all involved - enjoy some ‘snapshots' of the night.......

Mary-Rose will be heading to Japan for three months from November this year until early February 2017. Mary-Rose applied for an exchange program through Student Exchange Australia New Zealand. Mary-Rose is currently studying Japanese by distance education through Southern Cross Distance Education, well done Mary-Rose, a great opportunity.

Regional Athletics Carnival

7 RRHC students to compete at State Athletics
Congratulations to the students who competed in the Regional Athletics Carnival on Thursday 11th August 2016. All students represented RRHC proudly and competed with great sportsmanship.
Outstanding effort by Brianna Pickering, she won the Open girls Discus and Shot Put and set a new record in the Open girls Shot Put. Our junior girls also performed well, Siann Rose took out 1st place convincingly in the 100m sprint. She also did extremely well in the field events and won Long Jump, Javelin and Discus, well done Siann. Jazmin Bertuzzi came 2nd in the 15 years 1500m event and completed it in 6 minutes and 11 seconds.
Success also for our RRHC junior boys, in the 13 years boy's age group Reid Gosper won the Javelin and threw 33.42m. Lachlan Wallace jumped 1.69m in the 16yrs boy's High Jump to take out 2nd place, and also placed 4th in the 100m sprint and 3rd in the 400m. For the senior boys Liam Bertuzzi came 2nd in the 17+ 3000m run and Damon Mitchell ran a close 2nd in the 17+ 100m and 200m sprint.
Well done to all athletes who competed in the carnival and best wishes to those athletes who are competing at State Athletics. Ms T. Kelso

The Rivers Secondary College Open Boys Baseball side took on Castle Hill High School today. What seems like a pattern for this team, there were a number of errors that gave the visitors the lead after the first innings. After some sloppy pitching and a few consecutive hits by Alex Battese, Riley Gregor, Jordan Williams and Damon Mitchell, the Rivers made a strong come back to lead 7-1 in the 4th. Our boys wanted to make it hard for themselves by making a few more errors in the 5th innings, score held at 7-6. A brilliant display on the mound from Jordan Williams was only aided by a strong performance from Damien Santin. A well fought battle by both teams to take the game 9-6. The Rivers will now need to travel to Sydney to play in the Top 8. Well Done!

Questacon Teacher Workshop

Beyond Broncos Mentoring Program

Thursday 11th August RRHC hosted the Launch of the Beyond Broncos Mentoring Program for the Lismore area, involving Richmond River High, Lismore High, Kadina High, Woodlawn and Trinity students, parents and staff. Justin Hodges, Scott Prince and Bo de la Cruz, Ambassadors from the Broncos ran a workshop with students involved in the program.
This mentoring program involves a dedicated team of Broncos' Indigenous Support Staff, including ex RRHC student Josh Creighton, who will provide one-on-one mentoring support, encouragement and motivation for students to achieve maximum school attendance, effort and behaviour and to complete Year 12. Over 60 students are now enrolled in the program across the five schools.

Yamato Takada Japan - Visiting Students

To finish the visit the students held a Skype link with Yamato Takada's mayor and educational officials to formalise the successful exchange program. Tywanna, who gave the Acknowledgement of Country, was recognised as a previous participant in the program.

Does my adulthood look big in this? Some of the inaugural intake from Kadina High try out 2016 jumpers in the name of reuniting for a bit of fun – ready to party like it's 1981 are Sue Palmer, Debbie Elliott, Scott Whitby, Sherrie Viney, and Louise Somerville. Photo Tree Faerie.

Thirty-nine years ago Kadina High School in Goonellabah opened it's doors to a year 8 cohort, a group of teens who were always the "big kids" as the school grew when each new year 7 class enrolled behind them.

It was always going to be big when those students hit leaving in 1979 and did their HSC in 1981. Not a group for going quietly, the kids managed all the mayhem they could including storming the 2LM radio station control room and holding Nora Vidler hostage live on air for their muck up day.

Ready to relive those halcyon days and have a much needed catch up of toilet block gossip, this tightly-knit group will reunite in October and have a look at what the last 35 years has done to everyone.

Ex-students Scott, Barry and Dan will play in their band The Tesla Coil and plans are busily being made with much secret note passing and pencil case pinching…

The Rivers Secondary College is proud to announce ‘Rivers MADness' 2016 – a spectacular evening of Music, Art and Drama, set to showcase the brilliant talents of our HSC Creative and Performing Arts students.

Lismore Campus, Kadina Campus and Richmond River Campus will join forces on Wednesday the 24^th of August for the annual Rivers Secondary College event. The evening will commence at Lismore City Hall, with the Art Exhibition opening from 5:00pm until 6:15pm. Guests will be greeted with complementary canapés and beverages to accompany their visual experience. At 6:15pm, guests are to be seated for a 6:30pm official opening by the Lord Mayor Jenny Dowell. Following this, is the commencement of our outstanding Music and Drama performances. The evening is expected to conclude at 8:00pm.

‘Rivers MADness' is set to be an incredible representation of our public school community's most talented, at their creative best. The culmination of our students continued dedication and love of the arts is on show for one night only, so come and share in their special talents and be inspired by their passion…We look forward to seeing you there.

The NAIDOC Assembly was a very positive way to finish our NAIDOC celebrations at RRHC. The Assembly hosted by Jack Brady Corowa and Barry Butler started with a memorable "Welcome to Country" by Uncle Lewis Walker, Bundjalung Elder, in Indigenous language. The Keynote Address given by Dr Norm Sheehan, Gnibi College, SCU, reflected on this year's theme for NAIDOC "Songlines". Mrs Sonya Laverty addressed the Assembly about the success of the Widjabal Wiyabal Dreaming initiative of The Rivers College, and the positive impact it is having. Well done to The Rivers ATSI Performing Arts Ensemble who performed "Middle Earth". The RRHC staff band "Grug" did a great rendition of "Solid Rock". A very reflective and affirming Assembly, thank you to Mrs Paula Moverley and Mr Tyrone Connors, along with all the other staff, community members and students for making it such a memorable Assembly.

Yamato Takada tree planting ceremony at Kadina with Lismore Mayor Mrs. Jenny Dowell

Our visitors from Lismore City's sister city, Yamato Takada had a tree planting ceremony at Kadina with Lismore Mayor Mrs. Jenny Dowell as special guest.

The tree planting was of a Sasanqua Camellia, a small evergreen tree from Japan which grows to around 6 metres tall and 4 metres wide.

Kadina student Aleesa, who is going to Yamato Takada in September as part of a Lismore City initiative, did a great interview with NBN Lismore which will be aired this week.

Aleesa is one of 5 students from The Rivers Secondary College who will be going to Japan in September.

On Friday Kadina students will Skype with the Japanese Mayor of Yamato Takada and Principals from Japanese schools.

Aleesa, who is a talented musician will perform a musical number via Skype.

Coding - Kadina High Campus

As part of the Rivers Secondary College, Kadina High Campus is offering alternative programs. One current program is "Coding".

Coding is seen as a skill of the future and students at Kadina can now learn computer coding or programming in a fun way.

This alternative pathway group is using computer games formats to learn how to program a computer.

Using Code Academy and Gladiabots students can manipulate games to add their own action. A number of students participating in the course are already creating their own source codes using typed script.

Another alternative program running this term is skateboarding with students learning the skills to build a skateboard from scratch.

Yamato Takada Japan - Visiting Students

During the week Kadina High Campus will host students from Yamato Takada Japan.

Monday was the first day where they were met for morning tea by students from Kadina's Japanese club. The morning tea was hosted by our Year Ten Food Technology class. The first item of the agenda was cooking lamingtons and ANZAC biscuits. Following morning tea the visitors spent time in the newly refurbished Music Performance Space hosted by Ms Johnstone's class. One of the highlights was a Shota-a student from Kadina's sister school, Yamato Takada Commercial School playing one of Chopin's most difficult repertoire with grace and ease.
After the school assembly and lunch the students Spent time learning about the varied fauna and flora of Australia with Ms Somerfield before strolling through the Agriculture Plot. There the students tasted snap peas as well as interacting with the farm animals.
During the day new friendships were made, memories created and most importantly was the warm exchange of language, culture and understanding.
The next visit will be Wednesday where the students will be involved in a tree planting ceremony with Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell followed by Science and PE lessons.

WIDJABAL WIYABAL DREAMING is a new Initiative for The Rivers Secondary College. Digby Moran, a local Aboriginal artist designed our Widjabal Wiyabal logo, that is representative of our College structure and the future directions we would like our Aboriginal students to take. The emphasis of this program is for students to be immersed in aspects of leadership and cultural knowledge, in order to be their best and very proud Aboriginal self. Through consultation with students and Aboriginal community members, this initiative was created to develop leadership qualities through authentic and cultural experiences. Culture, Language, Identity and History were the themes central to our leadership experience, as well as advocating that we need to "Lead and Walk together" to create meaningful change.
This initiative was presented to a selected group of Aboriginal students this term over 5 days at Dorroughby Environmental Education centre, Southern Cross University's Language and Cultural nest, culminating at Lake Ainsworth for a day of Celebration and recognition. Students who completed the program, did so with greater cultural awareness and an enormous sense of pride.
Each day finished with students reflecting on the information that was offered to them by our leading facilitators. "Learning about my Aboriginal culture, closing the gap between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Australians, aspiring to be a better role model as well as being a mentor in my local Widjabal Wiyabal community", were mentioned throughout the program by our Aboriginal students during reflection time. Our students are all very excited about the way forward with this initiative and look forward to leading the way for all students across The Rivers Secondary College.
Widjabal Wiyabal Dreaming was opened with a traditional smoking ceremony performed by Dhinawan, a world renowned Aboriginal cultural ambassador and proud member of the Bundjalung nation. Steve Scott and Adrian Harrington spoke of significant sites, Bundjalung as a nation and other historical and cultural perspectives. Michelle Kelly, Val Smith and Dee Turner led some heartfelt and inspiring conversations around identity and Southern Cross university hosted our students at Gnibi- the Language and Cultural nest. An enormous thankyou goes out to Aunty Hazel Rhodes, Aunty Bertha Kapeen, Aunty Irene Harrington, Aunty Gwen Hickling, Uncle Charles Moran, Uncle Herb Roberts, Uncle Greg Harrington and Professor Sheahan for their story sharing and inspiring messages to go confidently in the directions of your dreams- using education as a means to do this. Our Widjabal Wiyabal team would also like to thank Virginia for organising such a memorable and culturally rich day as well as Tali and S-J for their presentation of the language app. Thank you to all of our facilitators and Mentors who made this experience genuine and inspiring for our students.

Our College Aboriginal Dance ensemble create "Mother Earth" composition

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from across The Rivers Secondary College have been rehearsing a contemporary ATSI dance for Richmond River High Campus' NAIDOC Assembly, to be held next Wednesday, 3rd of August.
The dance, entitled 'Mother Earth', is being taught by Richmond River High and Rivers Dance teacher Miss Elise Dessmann. Inspired by a dance created by the NSW DOE 'ArtsUnit', the dance explores our relationship with the Earth and, in tying in with the 2016 NAIDOC theme, the way that the Earth is a crucial component of every individual's personal song lines.
Students have been attentive, focused and have been taking tremendous pride in their work and in their culture. Many thanks must go to Miss Elise Dessmann, Mr. Tyrone Connors (RRHC AEO) and Mrs. Irene Clarke (KHC AEO) for their assistance in organising these rehearsal days.

This year our Rivers P-12 learning community are supporting new processes with transitioning year 6 students into our College. We recently conducted our "Meet and Greet" sessions for our larger feeder primary schools and will continue these sessions in term three for our smaller out of town primary schools. These extra transition visits are to ensure students and their families move into secondary settings in a caring and supportive way. Our next Orientation days, where our year 6 students will experience full days at our secondary campus sites will be: term three Tuesday, 13th September and two days in term four, Tuesday 29th November and Tuesday 6th December.

NAIDOC Celebrations

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee'. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.
NAIDOC assemblies at Kadina High and Lismore High Campuses this week provided our school community with knowledge of the significance of Storylines within Aboriginal Culture. Songlines- the living narrative of our nation was explained beautifully by both Professor Norm Sheahan and Aunty Virginia Paden. John Paden gave his acknowledgment of Country in the broader Bundjalung language and Ayden Miners acknowledged country as a proud Bundjalung man and both students provided an authentic welcome to both of our School Communities. We look forward to Richmond River High Campus hosting their NAIDOC assembly in term three.

The Rivers Secondary College Open Boys Softball

On Monday the 20th of June, the Rivers College Open Boys Softball team took on Kingscliff in round 4 of the CHS knockout competition. The weather, the Kingscliff team, which looked to be all footballers, and a Rivers team consisting of 1 softballer made out for an interesting game. Kingscliff swung first, and a comical of errors from the Rivers team gave Kingscliff the lead 6-0. With the help of a few errors by Kingscliff the score after the 1st innings was Kingscliff 6, Rivers 5. The baseball experience started to show with hits from Jordan Williams and Damon Mitchell from Richmond River Campus, Reece Gregor, Riley Gregor and Connor Wyles from Lismore High Campus and Oakley McMahon from Kadina Campus. Lachlan Zimmerman was the star pitcher, who would have taken the easy win if not for the errors by his teammates. Kingscliff tried to make a last minute come back off the pitching of Alex Battese, but came up short as the Rivers team won 28-11. Our team will now play either Orara High or Kempsey High in the regional final in which the winner will proceed to the top 16 state tournament in Sydney. Well done boys!

New Choices - Alternative Pathways to Positive Learning

New Choices has had an excellent start to the year. We have seen outstanding success from all our students, as they benefit from the intensive support that we provide. I got one of our students, Abby Roet to talk about the experiences in just one short term.

Kirt Swanbury – HT New Choices

New Choices began this term. This program is designed to help students like me, with their numeracy and literacy and develop pathways into training and employment.

Activities that we did throughout the term were:

Work experience – this term in New Choice we began our training by doing work experience, all students in the program were asked to choose a place where we would enjoy doing work placement, such as: Affordable beauty, Mary g's, radio stations and Network video.

TAFE taster – Wollongbar TAFE opened the door for students to hair and beauty, spray painting, hospitality, horticulture, agriculture, carpentry, mechanics, metal fabrications and digital technology

Rockets – at the beginning of this term all students in the program were asked to build and design their own rockets. After a few weeks of designing and building our rockets we went to one of the Lismore ovals to watch how our rockets worked.

Cooking in class – every Friday in middle session we would chose throughout the week what we would cook, we had to write out the recipe and steps on how to the cook and create our food. So far this term we have made: chicken burgers, beef burgers, pancakes, waffles and tacos.

Fishing – all students and staff took a trip to Evans Head for the day for fishing, sadly only one of us were able to catch a fish but we caught an octopus and a stingray. We learnt how to set up our rods and how to hook on squid and prawns. Was a very fun and enjoyable day!

Minyon Falls – In week 9 we drove out to Minyon Falls to do the whole 7 ½ km walk, it was such an amazing experience to be able to watch the falls from the bottom although it was freezing at the bottom and we got absolutely drench with water.

Employment - This term Christie Leigh-Elliott was chosen to do drive time with 92.9fm she chooses songs and talks over the radio from 4pm – 6pm on Tuesdays.

Three students currently enrolled in our College represent Far North Coast Hockey at the NSW State Championships in Taree.

Abbey Bailey and Holly Speers, both formerly of Wyrallah Road Public School and Denni-Lee Gray formerly of Bexhill Public School are representing Far North Coast Hockey in Taree. These talented hockey players have enjoyed the game for years as great friends and play for local Lismore hockey clubs-Northern Star and Easts. Congratulations girls on making it to this level. Congratulations to our Open Girls team who have been crowned North Coast Champions. Kingscliff High School, who have dominated North Coast Hockey for many years went down to our College team 3-2. Mrs Larrescy was very impressed with the manner in which our girls conducted themselves during this gruelling match to see who would be crowned the top team for the North Coast region.

Last night Mrs Purcell's Year 12 Hospitality class cooked for their family, friends and teachers, it was a very successful evening. The restaurant was the culmination of six weeks preparation of planning, testing, adjusting menus, ordering and preparing for the event. It bought together all the skills and practices they have learned throughout their course. Comments from those who attended were extremely positive, well done Year 12, Mrs Purcell and Ms Wraight.

RoboCup Junior Regional Winners
Congratulations to Jasper, Jayden, Damon, Levi and Clayton whose team "The Hunters" won the RoboCup Junior - Northern Rivers Region at SCU today. About twenty RRHC students participated in the day. The winning team had to write code for their robot "The Beast", to follow a line and then take control of a can. Well done to our Robotics teachers Ms P. MacLeod and Mr A. Clarke, for providing this opportunity.

Ms O'Sullivan took a number of students from Kadina High Campus to participate in the Southern Cross University Robotics "Search and Rescue Challenge " on Friday June 17th.
Students participated not only as teams from Kadina High Campus but, as part of the Rivers Secondary College, had combined teams with students from Kadina High Campus and Richmond River Campus participating as well.

The Rivers College Ancient History Excursion to Sydney

Nine Ancient History students from both Year 11 and 12 accompanied me on a whirlwind trip to Sydney. After a long and to some degree agonising train journey we arrived at Central station early Wednesday morning. After meeting up with Ms Dignan and 6 Lismore High students at our accommodation we began our day's activities. First stop was Susannah Place Museum in The Rocks. This is part of Sydney's Living Museum exhibit. It is a row of terrace houses built around 1840 and documents the daily life of the people who would have lived there. Our guide accompanied us to an excavation site under a large apartment block close to the harbour for us to see the layout of the 19th century house that is being excavated and the artefacts that they have found.

After a brief lunch break at Circular Quay we visited the Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney. The students were in awe of such a large and magnificent university. During our visit to the Nicholson Museum we were able to hold (with gloves of course) ancient artefacts of around 3000 years old. As the students investigated and drew their artefacts, there was absolute silence in the room. We conducted a guided tour of the museum and saw Horus, the Egyptian mummified child and other numerous awe inspiring artefacts. Before we left the University we briefly had a look at the Macleay Museum of natural history.
We were fortunate to be in Sydney during the Vivid light display, so after dinner we took our weary selves back to Circular Quay to see the light designs projected on the Opera House and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Our Year 12 students attended the History Teachers Association Study Day on Friday, before we flew home in the afternoon. The day was held at the University of Sydney and we watched three lectures, which covered the major topics the students have studied. The information provided in these lectures will be invaluable for their HSC. Meanwhile our Year 11 students accompanied by Ms Dignan visited the Ancient Cultures Museum at Macquarie University. They were met by Karl Van Dyke the Museum Director, who had just returned with a sword from the Han Dynasty for the museum's collection. The students were the first of the public to hold the precious artefact.
Even though we were all exhausted on arriving back to Ballina a fun and educational time was had by all. I would like to thank the students for their behaviour and maturity during the excursion and Lismore High for accompanying us. We hope it will be the first of many combined Rivers excursions. Our one complaint was that it wasn't long enough!

Kadina recently sent a team of staff to the Innovative Learning Design Conference in Coffs Harbour.
The team had an opportunity to focus on one of the Rivers Secondary College's strategic directions-- INNOVATION: Leading excellence in teaching and learning through quality, personalized and innovative programs inclusive of literacy, numeracy, creative, cultural, citizenship and digital curriculum's.

The ideas around personalized, creative, co-created learning is essential in the 21st Century and a project in this area excited the staff involved.

As a bonus the team won $6000 worth of innovative furniture for the classroom. Pictured are Ms Boulton, Ms Russell and Mr Baker, who along with Ms Fields attended the conference representing Kadina.

Richmond River High Campus Closed Friday 10th June

Flood Update
Throughout this morning we have been closely monitoring the clean-up. There is still significant work to be done to ensure that the school is safe for students when they return. Therefore the school will continue to be closed for students on Friday 10th June. Student safety has to remain our absolute priority.

The work that needs to be completed involves clearing drains, removing silt and debris from school grounds and the cleaning of student seating. Work will continue over the weekend to ensure all students can return to school on Tuesday.

The option of students attending Kadina High or Lismore High under the supervision of RRHC teachers will continue tomorrow. All students are asked to check their DEC email account as teachers may have sent learning activities to do from home. Senior students should continue to check their Google Classroom.

* Rivers Hockey
* Shared Curriculum classes at Kadina High and Lismore High Campus.

Richmond River High Campus Flood Update

Flood Update
The clean-up of the school grounds is still continuing and the school will remain non-operational on Thursday the 9th June. The school will be closed for students to ensure their safety.

Students will have the option to attend either Lismore High or Kadina High where Richmond River staff will greet them on arrival and provide supervision. Students who do not take up the option will remain under the supervision of their parent or carer.

The Year 12 Chemistry Excursion to Southern Cross University is still going ahead. Students involved are able to catch a taxi from the front of the school to the University and return.

Senior students are encouraged to regularly check their school emails as teachers will be in constant communication regarding school work, revision and assessments.

Richmond River High Campus Closed Wednesday 8th June

Due to Richmond River High Campus being closed Wednesday 8th June all Shared Curriculum classes held at Richmond River High will be cancelled. Shared Curriculum classes at Kadina High Campus and Lismore High Campus will proceed as normal. All Richmond River High students that are able to safely attend classes at their host campus, these classes will be running as normal.

Update for Richmond River High Campus

Although the school grounds are almost clear of flood waters the evacuation order for North Lismore remains current. We are unable to commence the clean up until the evacuation order has been lifted and the flood level has fallen below 7.2m.

This means that the school will be non-operational, closed to students on Tuesday 7th June. It is important than no student comes on to the grounds of the school until we re-open the school.

Year 10 Exams are postponed.

Senior students taking Rivers subjects are advised that courses run at Lismore and Kadina are still running. Please attend if you are able to get there safely. Do not cross any flood waters in an attempt to get to your classes.

From tomorrow students do have the opportunity to attend at one of our other campuses in the College, either Lismore High or Kadina High. There will be spaces provided at both of those schools and a limited number of Richmond River Staff will be offering generic lessons. Any students who would like to take up this opportunity need to report to either Lismore High or Kadina High front office to sign in and be directed to the learning space. Both Kadina High and Lismore High have the same start and finish times as Richmond River. Students taking this option must remember to wear RRHC school uniform and their families are responsible for transport. Students who do not take up the opportunity will remain under the supervision of their parents/caregivers.

The Ancient History Excursion to Sydney is still running. Reminder for senior students attending the excursion to be at the South Lismore Train Station at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm departure Tuesday 7th June.

Sam's 100km run for Charity

Sam Little, an ex student of Wyrallah Road Public School and Lismore High Campus and now a staff member of Wyrallah Road Public School, will be running 100km in an Ultra Trail in the Blue Mountains this Saturday, 14th May. He is raising funds for Wedgetail Retreat Community Hospice located near Murwillumbah. This hospice provides 24/7 nursing care for respite and palliative care to people with a life-limiting illness. Sam aims to raise over $100,000 for the charity.

Prue is also a secondary teacher but realised so many students really didn't know how to achieve academically. Her doctorate focused on how schools can help students with these study skills and she has shared her tips and techniques with over half a million parents and students since 2001.

New South Wales State Championships for Jade Gray

There is nothing grey about these sisters who both attended Bexhill Primary School and continue to shine on the Hockey field as North Coast School Sport representatives.

Jade Gray has achieved one of her goals for the year by making it into the North Coast girls Hockey team for the second year in a row. The team will go away to Unanderra on the South Coast in May this year.

Jade currently plays in the Lismore Women's A Grade Hockey Competition and is also a member of the NSW AAP Hockey squad for 2016. Jade is hoping to gain selection in the NSW under 18s State hockey team which will travel to Launceston, Tasmania in July to play in the Australian National Hockey Championship

Along side of Jade is her younger sister Denni-Lee Gray, a year 8 student who also attends Kadina High Campus. Denni-Lee was named as a shadow for The North Coast Hockey team which is a huge achievement for a year 8 student. Denni-Lee also plays A Reserve and A Grade in our women's hockey competition in Lismore.

Open Girls Football Team Success

Ashley Wilson provides Open girls football team with a specialist training session at Southern Cross Football centre in School holidays.

The Rivers Secondary College Girls team was provided with an excellent opportunity to train with Newcastle Jets W League Assistant coach during school holidays. Ashley also leads the PDHPE faculty at Hunter Sports High School. Her commitment to providing opportunities for girls in sport has been extended to young girls from her home town of Lismore.

Ashley spoke to the girls about the importance of working hard in all areas of their life, not just here on the football field. Ashley spoke of ensuring the girls set themselves goals, and working hard in all areas of their life to ensure you succeed in whatever you do. Working hard gives you just reward. There are so many opportunities in sport nowadays for women, and with these improved opportunities for all women in the elite sporting arena, with hard work you too may have the opportunities that some of my friends and students have overseas with football; particularly in Korea and America.

Coach Tony Wilson is impressed with the girls commitment both after school hours as well as in their school holidays to train and improve their individual and team skills as representatives of our College. Our college is very lucky to have a positive partnership with Southern Cross Football centre and we are committed to continuing these excellent opportunities for students within our College.

Minister for Education Visits.

Minister for Education visits our College. The Rivers Secondary College shared music class perform at Kadina High Campus.

During the visit Adrian Piccoli, Thomas George, Mr Ian Davies, Mr Warren Carter and Mr Matthew Rose were treated to a performance by our year 11 Rivers Secondary College Soul Band. This band, which includes students from across our college performed at Bluesfest recently. Further to this, Mr Matthew Rose, a teacher at Kadina High Campus also received a $5000 scholarship to retrain in Mathematics. Congratulations Mr Rose!

Liam who attended Wyrallah Road Public and Ben who attended Tregeagle Public, attend Kadina High Campus and Maddie, Hayden and Rattana of Richmond River High Campus are currently competing at the NSW CHS state swim championships in Homebush. Maddie Nilon who attended two local Lismore Primary Schools- Caniaba and Corndale, has represented North Coast School Sport at the State Championships for 8 years in total. The Combined High Schools State Baseball Championships were held in Belmont last week. The North Coast Team which included 9 of our Rivers students had an epic victory against South Coast. This was their first win in 3 years. What an awesome result from such a young team. Good things to come!

Janaya Everingham, past student from RRHC, has made it through to the NSW Miss World Australia 2016 state final. Being involved in this pageant enables her to give back to the community as it is charity based. Her first fundraising event is for 'Variety' which aims to empower Australia's sick, disadvantaged or special needs children and helps them overcome the obstacles they face in life. The aim of the Miss World competition is to encourage women to lead a compassionate and humanitarian life.

Cam Thorley of Year 12, has raised over $500 for The Leukaemia Foundation by participating in "The World's Greatest Shave". He lost his locks and beard at school on Friday 11th March. Cam collected over $270 for the Leukaemia Foundation from the Richmond River High Campus community, inclusive of staff and students, well done.

In true Lismore High spirit the Campus motto "Spectemur Agendo" (Let us be Judged by our Actions) carries on throughout life. Former Lismore High student, Sam Little, will be competing in the Ultra-Trail Australian Marathon for his mate, Nat Daley (also a former LHC student) in an effort to raise funds for Wedgetail Retreat. Nat had to pull out of the event due to being critically injured in a car accident. Sam has had major health issues, however, showing true 'mateship', Sam instantly stepped in to cover. Wedgetail Retreat is a community respite and hospice facility that provides support and palliative care to people of all ages with life-limiting illness. North Coast Baseball Team

Elise Dessman leads our Dance program across The Rivers Secondary College, producing unique opportunities for our students. Dance is offered as an elective for years 9, 10, 11 and 12 across our College each year, as well as through our traditional sports model. Further opportunities are provided through our innovative Rivers P-12 Dance ensemble which receives private group lessons from Ms Dessman on a regular basis, where she is extending their interests and abilities in a state of the art dance studio. Our Rivers dance groups will perform at the Far North Coast dance festival, at local events such as the Performing Arts festival as well as across our Rivers P-12 Learning Community at formal assemblies and local community events.

Richmond River High Campus recently inducted their 2016 School Leaders and SRC members at a School Assembly. We congratulate School Captains - Lindley Schneider and Brodie Stanton, Vice Captains Year 12 - Phoebe Rowlandson and Tiger Jefferys and Vice Captains Year 11 - Chloe Willis and Jessica Martin.

Included in the ceremony was the presentation of the Carr Legacy Scholarships where 5 recipients were presented by Mrs Janet Sherrin and Mrs Barbara Kearney with $10,000 to go towards their university education. Recipients included Adam Friend, Zoe Bertuzzi, Ava Callachor, Georgia Morris and David Stuckey.

Former Kadina Student Receives Grammy Award

The staff of The Rivers Secondary College would like to sincerely welcome all students and their families back to another year of learning and growth.

The three campuses of the College have been planning and implementing many aspects of their operations aimed at enhancing the learning and teaching processes for another successful year. Our shared curriculum for stage 6, Years11 & 12, has now grown to support more then 130 students travelling across the college to pursue their preferred subject choices.

There are plans for the staff across the College to undertake significant collaborative professional learning. The entry of combined campus sporting teams will commence soon, as well as planning for joint cross college performances.

We are particularly welcoming of our newly enrolled students into Year 7, as well as those new to our College. There will be upcoming opportunities to meet the campus staff at a variety of functions which will be advertised from each campus.

The entire staff wish each and every one of our students a year of success and achievement through accepting the opportunities that are available especially as we make enhancements across the learning and teaching areas as a result of our work in what we call our Personalised Learning Project.

Tom and Chris receive the highest recognition for secondary students at the North Coast Sports awards luncheon in Coffs Harbour.

Tom Brown of The Rivers Secondary College, Lismore High Campus achieves the highest sporting honour within the North Coast Sporting arena. He received the "Col Fisher- Sportsman of the year" award as well as a North Coast CHS Blues award for hockey as a player and an official.

Chris Riley of The Rivers Secondary College, Richmond River High Campus achieved recognition in the Sport of Rugby Union. Chris gained a New South Wales Combined High Schools Sporting Blue for gaining selection in the U/16 Rugby Union State team. Chris has also represented Northern Rivers Zone and North Coast with distinction.

Inaugural Rivers P-12 White Ribbon Day a huge success

The Rivers P-12 Learning Community band together to speak up against domestic and family violence in Lismore.

Our learning community banded together to have 145 individuals of all ages and abilities sign up on the day for the walk; who also took the White Ribbon oath by swearing never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. Our very first White Ribbon Day raised almost Two Thousand Dollars. This money will go towards services to support women and children in our Lismore community. Albert Park, Goonellabah, Wyrallah Road, Kadina, Lismore and Richmond River students and Principals are only 6 of the 34 schools who will come together on Sunday 22 November to raise awareness about domestic and family violence.

The Rivers P-12 Learning Community comprising 34 schools will band together to host the very first White Ribbon Day for the Lismore community at Hepburn Park. This day will raise much needed funds for Lismore domestic and family violence services and White Ribbon organisation. You can walk through the Butterfly Gully and search for the fairies in the garden or come up and race in the 100m dash. Various stalls will be selling food, drinks and other goods. There will be a coffee van, BBQ, jumping castle, face painting, lollies, a sensory tent and much more. Hope to see you there.

All smiles after receiving their National Art School 2016 HSC results this week - from left: Shannon Richardson - 45/50, Bardie Somerville - 48/50, Teshan Joy - 46/50 & Oscar Vaneria-Jameison - 48/50.

The course - Intensive Studio Practice - is a Content endorsed Course which is highly competitive, with only the most talented students enrolled in the Preliminary Visual Arts Course able to apply. The students went to Sydney in both the July and October Holidays to receive intensive studio experience as an artist in a tertiary setting at the National Art School, and to gain accreditation for one unit towards their HSC in the following year (2016).

To gain selection is a feat in itself, having four students from one school is almost unheard of – and for the students to achieve such outstanding results is phenomenal, and a credit to their talent and dedication. Congratulations!

Kadina High Campus "Power UP"

In recognition of Mental Health month- Kadina High Campus host the very first "Power Up" day for all students.

All students attending Kadina High Campus were involved in a series of workshops provided by experts in their field. All areas of Mental Health were recognised in the workshops and students were inspired by staff from Kadina High Campus and Lismore community organisations- including Headspace and The Buttery. Mental Health is one's ability to overcome certain challenges in life and this day certainly raised awareness about Mental Health Challenges and the Support Networks for young people, both now and in the future. Students were also reminded that physical activity, adequate sleep and good nutrition play a vital role in maintaining a balance in their life. Kadina High Students thoroughly enjoyed the day and have been empowered to make a difference as young people, both inside and outside of the school community. Congratulations Kadina- Knowledge is Power!

Welcome to the Real World

One of the most frightening experiences we can have is facing a panel of strangers, knowing your future depends on how well you go! Choosing the right clothes, arriving on time, producing great samples of work and pretending you're confident, friendly and intelligent – a nerve-wracking experience!

At Lismore High we have our Quality Portfolio Program to give our students a chance to face future tertiary and workplace interviews in a non-threatening environment. Year 11 has just completed the program and, now the nerves have settled, the laughter has replaced the groans and disgruntled murmurings, they are feeling pretty pleased with themselves. They discovered friendly and experienced panels who discussed work, challenges and strategies in non-threatening ways; uncovered skills and talents not before realised; left feeling proud and prepared to work a little bit harder, and value the skills and achievements gained.

What's next? Year 7 will undergo a similar process at the end of the term and by then they should have heard from Year 11 that this isn't a daunting process but a real experience!

Anna-Leeza Hull: ex- Modanville Primary School student with a big future in Australian cycling.

Anna-Leeza Hull (NSW) earned back-to-back bronze medals in the under 19 women's time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia on Monday.

The reigning Australian junior national and Oceania champion used the technical second half of the course to gain time on her rivals and jump up from a provisional seventh at the only intermediate time check to third at the finish. With only one rider still out on course, Hull only had a short wait to learn that her time of 22 mins 34 secs over the 15-kilometre course was good for bronze. Read more here

Finalists at the New South Wales Combined High Schools Athletics Championships for the U/14's Girls Relay...

Tayla attended Goonellabah Public School, Laquisa and Renee Lismore Heights Public School and Olivia Tregeagle Public School. These girls made up the Kadina High Campus U/14's girls Relay team which competed at the 2015 NSW CHS Athletics Championships in Homebush.

This talented relay team, who have never run together before this meet, had two students that ran up an age level and still managed to come fourth in New South Wales. FANTASTIC NEWS! Mr Phil Dalli is to be acknowledged here for realising the girls had enormous potential individually and placed them together in a relay team to hopefully make it to the State Championships. This vision certainly paid off!

Congratulations girls, your talent is remarkable and you have been great ambassadors for The Rivers Secondary College.

Tayla also made it into the final of the 14 girls 100m dash and competed in the 200m semi-final. Congratulations!

A fine example of SPORTING EXCELLENCE- Denni-Lee Gray, Kadina High Campus.

Denni-Lee represents the U/13's NSW Hockey Team at Olympic Park in Homebush. From a squad of 45, she made the final team of 16 and even though she has made the NSW team, her next goal is to make the North Coast CHS Open Hockey team.

Allison Larrescy is excited about the Hockey talent within The Rivers Secondary College and is looking forward to 2016. Denni-Lee, whilst only in year 7, will play an important role in this skillful team in 2016.

Harry Brown of Richmond River High Campus will be attending the Australian Championships next week in Caloundra.

Harry has been successful gaining selection into the U/18's New South Wales Touch Football team. He has had a long history of success with Touch Football and has shone in the Northern Eagles and NSW Touch Association selection process.

Harry's excellence in Sport at Richmond River High Campus has inspired younger players to follow their dream of representing in New South Wales teams and Australia, in the sport of Touch Football.

ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY for our Rivers Secondary College Mathematics students beyond the classroom...

Year 9 Northern Networks Maths Quest was a great day of fun and figures as Richmond River High School hosted the annual Maths Quest tournament. This quest saw the best Year 9 maths students from across the Northern Rivers compete against each other.

The annual event is made up of teams of four. These include an individual event, in which students are asked to solve mathematical problems, a team's problem solving challenge, which this year looked at the Ewingsdale to Tintenbar highway upgrade and a relay event.
Congratulations to the two Richmond River teams that competed so well on the day. The students were Jacob Ross, Tully Dixon, Oliver De-Milford and Jack Brady-Corowa. The girl's team was Savannah Smith, Tiffany Hull, Sophie Mills and Ursula Schneider.

Millie Burnett of The Rivers Secondary College- Kadina High Campus has achieved highest recognition for outstanding Community Service within the Northern Rivers.

School Vice-Captain Millie Burnett has been chosen by a panel of eminent persons to be awarded a 2015 John Lincoln Youth Community Service Award. The Order of Australia Association-NSW branch awards 25 Certificates of Commendation to students in NSW Secondary Schools for service to community in which the student lives. Millie was recognised for her initiatives and service to the community at large.

This award not only recognises Millie's contribution to the school as School Vice-Captain, and her work in the SRC and Leos. It also recognises her work as a volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Bank, her work at the Northern Rivers Child Care Centre, her sportsmanship, and her work in fundraising for a number of charities.

Bravo and Congratulations to The Rivers Secondary College for producing such extroardinary Art, Music and Drama major works.

Lismore High Campus art students were really excited about the evening, and were very inspired. Ms Ros Miles, an art teacher at Lismore High Campus mentioned after Jenny Dowell's opening address, that our students were inspired to create more artistic works.

"It was a great atmosphere and lovely ambience at The Bank Cafe. All visitors gave positive, complementary feedback of the inspiring display of creative works. Jenny Dowell gave a brilliant opening address". Said Ms McLean of Kadina High Campus.

Following this the HSC Music and Drama students performed at the gorgeous Star Court Theatre.

The talent of our Students in The Rivers Secondary College is outstanding and it is certainly a privelege to work beside them. They work so hard, countless hours of practice and it is so great we get to share their talents with you", said Mr Ben Wordsworth of Richmond River High Campus.

The HSC students felt that the next step for The Rivers Secondary College was to create a Rivers Secondary College Rock Band, whereby, they could collaborate and create more with like minded students. This was certainly the feeling of all 35 students involved in the evening.

Sporting Excellence for Lismore High Campus Student

In April this year, Tom was a member of the NSW Under 18 Blue's State Team that competed in Melbourne. In this tournament, Tom was playing up an entire age division. In addition to this, Tom competed at the NSW Under 18 Hockey Championships in Narellan, where he again played up an age division representing the Far North Coast. From here, he made the Under 16 NSW Squad, successfully gaining selection in the "NSW Under 16 All Schools" team that played at the National Championships in Perth. Tom captained the NSW Team which were undefeated all tournament, but they unfortunately lost the Grand Final against QLD 3-2.

"The highlight of the tournament for me was being named in the Australian School Boys Under 16 Hockey Team, to tour South Africa in June 2016", said Tom.
